2. Fifi and the Mystery of the Midnight Whistle
One chilly evening in Meadowville, as the stars twinkled and the moon glowed high above the treetops, Fifi the detective mouse was getting cosy in her favourite reading chair.
She sipped warm peppermint tea, wrapped in a patchwork quilt, when suddenly—WHOOOO-WHEEEEEE! A strange whistle echoed through the night.
Fifi’s ears perked up.
“That’s not an owl,” she whispered, hopping to her tiny feet. “That’s a mystery.”
Moments later, there was a knock at the door.
Aurora, her golden retriever best friend, stood there with her ears flopped and nose twitching. “Did you hear that, Fifi? It came from the old train tracks!”
Fifi grabbed her magnifying glass and put on her detective hat. “Let’s go!”
By torchlight, the two friends trotted through the quiet village and along the overgrown path toward the old railway line.
Near the station, Fifi spotted something odd. “Look! Tiny feathers, a trail of seeds… and steam!”
Aurora sniffed the air. “Not from a train. Maybe a bird? Or someone pretending to be one?”
They followed the clues to the old signal house. Inside, they found a baby owl huddled on a pile of hay, holding a silver whistle in its beak.
“Oh!” said Fifi softly. “It was you making the sound?”
The baby owl blinked wide eyes. “I didn’t mean to scare anyone. I just wanted someone to come.”
“Why, little one?” Aurora asked gently.
The owl sniffled. “I got lost from my nest. I thought maybe the whistle would bring help.”
Fifi’s whiskers twitched with thought. “You were very clever to think of that.”
Aurora gave the owl a gentle nuzzle. “And very brave, too.”
Together, they helped the owl find his way back to the tree where his worried mum awaited. She flapped down and gave her baby a feathery hug.
“Thank you, Fifi and Aurora,” she hooted.
💛 The Moral of the Story
Fifi and Aurora smiled all the way home.
“See?” Fifi said. “Even mysteries in the night can turn into acts of kindness.”
“Especially,” Aurora added, “when you help someone feel safe.”
Because true friendship means showing up — even when it’s dark and a bit spooky.
